Benefits

Flexibility and Convenience

Our graduates often use the words, "flexibility and convenience" to characterize distance education. They can watch the lectures whenever they want, so courses fit into their work and home life. Distance education also benefits students too far away to attend conventional on-campus courses and local students whose work schedules make coming to campus difficult. As our students tell us:

"I liked the fact that I could do course work on my own time without having to interrupt my work schedule and busy personal schedule."

"Given my family and work responsibilities, I view the classes at night, which is more convenient for me."

"The program is very well organized and is targeted for students who do not have easy access to a university"

Master of Civil Engineering Degree

For many years, the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at NC State has offered graduate courses through distance education. We now offer a Master of Civil Engineering (MCE) degree through distance education. The advantages of obtaining an MCE degree are numerous:

bullet 1

become better at your job

bullet 2

make yourself more marketable

bullet 3

satisfy your personal interest in more knowledge

bullet 4

broaden your expertise

bullet 5

gain a deepter understanding of your field

bullet 6

improve your confidence in formulating and solving problems

If you add flexibility and convenience to the advantages of obtaining an MCE degree, you will see why are graduates are high on distance education:

"I believe that the master's degree has helped me obtain my last two job promotions."

"Got an immediate pay raise, and it led to an excellent promotion opportunity."

"I can't recommend this program highly enough for the working professional"

North Carolina State University

NC State and the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering have established a track record in distance education. For nearly 20 years, the Department has worked with Engineering Online in the College of Engineering to deliver courses to you. Formerly called Video-Based Engineering Education (VBEE), Engineering Online is a well-established infrastructure for assisting students with the daily logistics of distance courses. This includes assistance in ordering textbooks, delivery of lectures, frequent posting of course materials, and sending and receiving assignments. According to our students:

"NC State knows how to plan and implment distance education effectively."

"Being a distance education student enables you to use a libray service that will photocopy and mail journal articles and other materials at no cost other than copying costs."

"If it wasn't for the convenience of VBEE, I would not have been able to earn my master's degree. The VBEE program is great and should be considered by anyone whose job or personal schedule prevents them from attending classes."
