Distance Education MCE Specialized Plans of Study
As a distance education student, there are opportunities for you to
specialize in selected fields of civil engineering such as Water
Resources and Environmental Engineering (WREE), Transportation
Systems and Materials, and Multidisciplinary
plans of work. In addition, your degree may include course work in related
supporting areas such as computer science, statistics, public administration,
and business, or other engineering disciplines. Your MCE degree course
selections will be planned by you and your advisor to meet flexible
department and Graduate School Requirements considering your own educational
and career objectives.
Students interested in specializing in WREE will find multiple course
offerings such as water/wastewater treatment, air pollution control
and quality, solid and hazardous waste management, water resources,
environmental engineering principles, and risk assessment.
Students will have many options for developing individualized plans
of study that will include courses most relevant to their needs. Students
specializing in this area also may draw upon other course offerings
in the department. For example, a student interested in transportation
and air quality may wish to take a course in traffic operations. Students
also are encouraged to take courses outside Civil Engineering such as
computer science, chemical engineering, business, public affairs, operations
research, and others, all available through Engineering
Online.
Students specializing in WREE in general have the option of doing a
three-credit hour individual project mutually agreed to by you and a
faculty member.
The courses included in this specialization area are introductory graduate
courses in transportation systems, transportation operations, highway
safety systems, and advanced courses in traffic flow theory, transportation
systems, highway and airport pavement design, and pavement management
systems. Students will have a variety of options in both transportation
systems and materials from which to develop a well-balanced plan of
work.
Students specializing in this area also may draw upon other course
offerings in the department. For example, a student interested in highway
design may want to take courses in structures and mechanics. Students
also are encouraged to take courses outside Civil Engineering such as
computer science, business, statistics, operations research, mathematics,
and others, all available through Engineering
Online.
Students specializing in Transportation Systems and Materials will
have to complete a three-credit hour project course.
