Admission Requirements
Full graduate admission requires a baccalaureate degree, with at least a "B" average in the undergraduate major, from an accredited engineering program. Applicants without prior academic work in civil engineering, construction engineering and management, or environmental engineering may be admitted provisionally and are required to complete certain minimum requirements in mathematics, science, and basic engineering in addition to the normal graduate degree requirements. Provisional admission may be granted to applicants who do not satisfy normal admission criteria but have significant work experience or other special qualifications.
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) normally is required of all applicants. This requirement may be waived upon written request for an applicant with an exceptional academic record who does not desire financial aid.
Guidelines for Minimum Undergraduate Requirements for Graduate Program Applicants without a Prior BS Degree in Engineering
Civil Engineering graduate program applicants without a prior BS in engineering are expected to make up course deficiencies with the intent of satisfying two objectives:
- Develop course prerequisite background for the Civil Engineering graduate program in the specialty elected.
- Attain an education by the end of the proposed graduate degree equivalent to the minimum hour content requirements for an ABET-EAC accredited BS engineering degree.
The first objective is to ensure reasonable preparation for graduate courses so that the pace of the courses will not be hindered for other students. The second objective is to enhance, but not guarantee, opportunity for individuals without a prior ABET-EAC engineering degree to pursue Professional Engineering licensure. ABET-EAC requires the following minimum content:
- Mathematics and Basic Science: 32 credit hours
Calculus (MA 141, 241, 242), Statistics (ST 370), and possibly Differential Equations (MA 341); Physics (calculus-based, PY 208), Chemistry (CH 101/102), and others such as Biology or Geosciences. Some of these hours may be at the graduate level.
- Engineering Science and Engineering Design: 48 credit hours
Normal Minimum Undergraduate Engineering Courses for Individual Specialty Areas
Select one area; additional courses are desirable; GPA of 3.0 and C or better in all courses required.
- Construction Engineering and Management: 25 credit hours
CE 214, CE 215, CE 313, CE 325, CE 327, CE 332, CE 342, CE 426 - Geotechnical / Geoenvironmental Engineering: 22 credit hours
CE 214, CE 215, CE 313, CE 325, CE 327, CE 332, CE 342 - Materials: 25 credit hours
CE 214, CE 215, CE 313, CE 325, CE 327, CE 332, CE 342, MSE 200 - Structural Engineering and Mechanics: 25 credit hours
CE 214, CE 215, CE 313, CE 325, CE 327, CE 332, CE 342, CE 426 - Transportation Systems: 18 credit hours
CE 201/203, CE 214, CE 215, CE 305, CE 332, CE 375 - Water Resources, Coastal, and Environmental Engineering: 18 credit hours
CE 214, CE 215, CE 375, CE 382, and two from CHE 205, MAE 301, CE 313, CE 373, CE 383, CE 484
Computer-Aided-Engineering specialty applicants must meet one of the area requirements above.
The remaining courses needed to achieve the 48-hour engineering total must be engineering courses and may be at the undergraduate or graduate level. The graduate level courses may be part of the requirements for the graduate degree. When prerequisites have been taken, some graduate courses may be taken in parallel with the undergraduate courses.
