Graduate Degree Programs

The Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering offers programs of study leading to the Master of Science (M.S.), Master of Civil Engineering (M.C.E.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees.

The M.S. degree requires a minimum of 31 hours of graduate work including six hours of thesis credit and a one credit seminar course.

Thirty-one hours of graduate course work are required for the M.C.E. degree. An independent study project may be substituted for up to three hours of course work with the agreement of a faculty adviser.

For the Ph.D program, there are no definite credit hour requirements. One year of course work beyond the master's degree is typical. The major element of the doctoral program is the dissertation, which reports an original investigation leading to a significant contribution to knowledge.

Final oral examinations are required for the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees.

Areas of Specialization and Core Courses

Graduate students in water resources and environmental engineering typically specialize in one or more sub-areas in accordance with their research interests and career objectives. These sub-areas include the following:

All specialty areas are built from a set of suggested courses. Additional courses are selected by the student in consultation with an advisor. By working with faculty members from both Geotechnical Engineering and Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, students may also specialize in Geoenvironmental Engineering.
