Facilities

The Civil Engineering Department is located in Mann Hall, which houses well-equipped laboratories and computer facilities for instruction and research, classrooms, and offices. Computer facilities for graduate students include the College of Engineering Eos network of more than 1,000 workstations and numerous microcomputers. The Eos system provides access to a wide range of engineering software, as well as to other campus-wide and off-campus computers. The Department's laboratories contain a variety of special equipment for research in structures, mechanics, soils, construction materials, construction engineering, hydraulics, and coastal and environmental engineering. The special facilities are described more fully in the separate brochures for each program area.

The Department's facilities are supplemented by the additional resources of the College of Engineering, including an electron microscope, x-ray analysis facilities, mass spectrometer, precision machine shop and instrument shop.

The University's D.H. Hill Library has strong research collections in all fields of engineering and is a depository for U.S. federal documents. The collections include more than 1,200,000 books and bound journals, 2,500,000 microforms, and 600,000 government publications. Approximately 8,500 journals are received regularly. As a further aid to research, an interlibrary loan program provides daily access to research holdings of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke University, and other libraries in the Research Triangle.
