Structural Engineering and Mechanics

Graduate Degree Programs

The Master of Science degree requires a minimum of 30 semester hours of graduate study including 6 credit hours for a thesis and a final oral examination. The Master of Civil Engineering degree requires a minimum of 30 semester hours of graduate study without a thesis. Both degrees require 18 credit hours in structures and mechanics, of which 12 hours must be taken from a set of core courses in structural analysis and design and solid mechanics. Additionally, 6 of those 18 hours must be from 600-level courses or research in structures and mechanics. Students may also obtain master's degrees in mechanics, in which case a plan of study is prepared by the student's advisor.

The Ph.D. degree normally includes one academic year of full-time course work beyond the master's degree. The major component of the Ph.D. program is preparation of a dissertation reporting the results of an original investigation that represents a significant contribution to knowledge.
