Transportation Systems and Materials

North Carolina State University has been a leader in transportation engineering education since Professor Wallace Riddick began teaching road building in the 1890's. Today's programs are still at the cutting edge of technology, with instruction and ongoing research in IVHS and modern pavement design concepts. As an N.C. State transportation engineering graduate, you will join hundreds who have gone on to important roles in academe, government, and consulting. N.C. State's reputation as a "Top 20" graduate engineering institution will benefit you throughout your career.

The Civil Engineering Department at North Carolina State University offers gradute programs in two major areas of transportation engineering: transportation systems and transportation materials. They embrace a wide range of skills including the planning, analysis, design, construction, and management of transport facilities and the materials from which they are built. The graduate programs are centered around a set of core civil engineering courses in transportation that combine current practice and basic theory. Around these core courses, students can develop programs that explore a single topic in-depth and may include supporting courses in other areas of civil engineering or other disciplines. Advisors work closely with students to design their programs of study.

Sources of Funding

A variety of sources have funded transportation engineering research projects conducted by North Carolina State University. The North Carolina Department of Transportation has been the major funding source of these projects over the years. Other important sources have been the Southeastern Transportation Center, the Federal Highway Administration, the Federal Transit Administration, and the National Cooperative Highway Research Program. Many other governmental and private agencies fund projects in transportation engineering at North Carolina State University from time to time.

Financial Support

Fellowships, traineeships, teaching assistantships, and research assistantships are available for highly qualified students. Awards are made on a competitive basis and amounts are similar to or higher than most other major research universities. In-state tuition rates are among the lowest in the U.S., and the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition is currently paid a maximum of three semesters for U.S. citizens who are awarded a research or teaching assistantship.
