Transportation Systems and MaterialsGraduate Degree ProgramsMaster's and Ph.D. degrees are offered in transportation engineering. Both the Master of Science of Civil Engineering and Master of Civil Engineering degrees require 30 semester hours of graduate study. The Master of Civil Engineering requires three semester hours of independent study with a final written report while the Master of Science requires a thesis of not more than six credit hours. Up to 12 semester hours of graduate credit may be transferred from other accredited schools. A master's degree program may be customized to the professional and academic needs of the student. Typical Master of Science degree programs in Systems and Materials are: Transportation Systems:CE 501 Transportation Systems Engineering 3 hours CE 502 Traffic Operations 3 hours CE 503 Highway Design 3 hours Other Transportation Course 3 hours Other CE or Transportation Courses 3 hours Minor/Supporting Area Courses 9 hours CE 695 Master's Thesis Research 6 hours Total 30 hours NC State Transportation Engineering Program, Feasible Course Sequences:*
Transportation Materials:CE 753 Asphalt and Bituminous Materials 3 hours CE 755 Highway Pavement Design 3 hours CE 757 Pavement Management Systems 3 hours Other CE or Transportation Courses 6 hours Minor/Supporting Area Courses 9 hours CE 699 Master's Thesis Preparation 6 hours Total 30 hours Supporting area courses may be chosen from other civil engineering specialties or other fields such as computer science, economics and business, operations research, mathematics, statistics, public administration, and urban planning. If desired, a minor may be designated in the Master of Science program. Additionally, students may take courses in urban and regional planning, real estate development, and other transportation-related topics at UNC-Chapel Hill. Many of these courses, as well as certain courses at Duke University, may be used to fulfill North Carolina State University's degree requirements. North Carolina State University's well-respected Ph.D. program usually requires about three years of combined course work and research beyond the master's degree level. Students have great flexibility in designing their Ph.D. program because there is no formal credit-hour requirement beyond the master's degree level. As with the master's degree, the Ph.D. program is tailored to the needs of the student. The student's dissertation and research, which must represent a significant contribution to the field of transportation engineering, make up the core of the Ph.D. program requirements.
