Transportation Systems and MaterialsResearch FacilitiesGraduate activities in transportation engineering take place in Mann Hall, the home of the Civil Engineering Department. Graduate students have access to state-of-the-art computing, library, and laboratory facilities and adequate office space. The computer systems are especially noteworthy. They include personal computers, mainframes, and a network of hundreds of workstations in the College of Engineering-all supported by a large and helpful staff. The university's libraries maintain a leading collection of transportation literature that, when combined with cooperative access to the libraries at Duke University and UNC-Chapel Hill, provide the student with almost every reference needed. The department's materials laboratory includes a Material Test System with computerized control and data acquisition, an environmental test chamber, compactors, and various high-quality testing devices. On campus, the Transportation Materials Research Center and the Center for Transportation and the Environment offer students facilities and opportunities for projects. Within a few miles of campus are the research and design facilities of the North Carolina Department of Transportation, one of the world's largest transportation organizations. Also in Raleigh are the facilities of the Institute for Transportation Research and Education, a leading statewide umbrella organization, and the offices of many large consulting firms. Finally, in the Research Triangle region, students also have opportunities to work with Duke University's transportation engineering program and UNC-Chapel Hill's Highway Safety Research Center. |
