Professor John H. Schmertmann has been active in research, design, construction and innovations, and he has served in many review boards and as an expert witness for many years. Dr. Schmertmann is a generalist at a time when many have specialized. His contributions, and the topics of this Geotechnical Special Publication cover the whole field of geotechnical engineers.
